Heel Spurs & Bone Spurs

Bone spurs, also known as osteophytes, are bony growths that develop along the edges of bones, often in response to ongoing pressure, rubbing, or stress. When these spurs form on the bottom of the heel bone, they’re referred to as heel spurs—a common cause of heel pain, particularly in active individuals or those with flat feet, high arches, or tight calf muscles.

Heel spurs often develop in conjunction with plantar fasciitis, a condition involving inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. While the spur itself may not always be the direct source of pain, it can aggravate soft tissues and contribute to chronic discomfort, especially when walking or standing for long periods.

Bone spurs can also occur in other areas of the foot and ankle, including the top of the foot, the toes, or the Achilles tendon insertion point. Depending on their location, spurs may cause pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, or pressure on surrounding nerves.

Our podiatric team offers comprehensive evaluation and diagnostic imaging to determine the presence and impact of bone spurs. Treatment options are tailored to your symptoms and may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications or injections to reduce pain and swelling
  • Orthotics or shoe modifications to offload pressure and improve foot mechanics
  • Stretching and physical therapy to relieve tension in affected muscles and tendons
  • Minimally invasive surgery, in rare cases, to remove the spur and restore function

Early intervention can help you avoid worsening symptoms and maintain an active, pain-free lifestyle. If you're experiencing persistent heel or foot pain, let us help you find relief with a customized treatment plan.
